Not a great number of famous authors but here is a list of those that we know of (In no particular order). This is not an exhaustive search and I would be interested in finding out more if your research continues.

Alban Butler - 18th Century author of "Lives of the Saints" and other work
John Clare - Born 1793, probably the most famous of authors from the county. A Poet that produced a number of books collecting his poems. Known as the 'Peasant Poet' due to his humble upbringings. The Northamptonshire Library has a large collection of his works.
H. E. Bates - born in 1905 at Rushden, Bates was a prolific author with the most famous works resulting in the 'Darling Buds of May' series. He was awarded a C.B.E in 1973 but sadly died in 1974.
Jerome K. Jerome - Died in the county (1927), most famous book of many was "Three Men in a Boat"
Current
Andrew Collins - BBC Journalist and Broadcaster. Authored 2 recent books about growing up in Northamptonshire - "Where did it all go right?" and "Heaven knows I'm miserable now!"
Mark Haddon - Winner of the Whitbread Prize Book of the Year 2004 - "The Curious Incident"
Alan Moore - Very influential in the US Comic Book industry creating many big name characters including the 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' and 'Constantine' (Both recent movies). Written a book based in Northampton -"Voice from the Fire". Rumored to be authoring a second set in Northampton too. Still lives in the town, recently re-married (March 2007).
