possibly going to be used by the local college to test lifts again....
they want to set up a 'lift centre of excellence'

Synopsis
- built of 4,000 tons of reinforced concrete.
- Commissioned in 1978
- designed by architects Stimpson and Walton
- built by the Express Lift company in 1980.
- opened by The Queen Elizabeth II in November 12 1982.
- Terry Wogan dubbed it 'The Northampton Lighthouse'.
- It’s a circular tower of 127.45 metres high (taller than Salisbury Cathedral).
- diameter of 14.6 metres at the base, tapering to 8.5 metres at the top.
- lift shafts were designed to test lifts travelling at up to 7 metres per second.
- upper part of tower has a distinctive pierced jagged shape aimed at reducing the vortex effect.
- Express Lift company closed after being sold to another lift manufacturer, Otis, and the last 500 workers clocked out on Thursday 30th January 1997.
- Became a Grade II listed building in October 30th 1997.
- The building has unfortunately never been open to the General Public ~ wouldn't you just love to go up and have a look at the view.
