Catesby is comprised of two villages, upper and lower Catesby which are small but both distinct villages.
There once was a Priory here of which little evidence remains although the fishponds are still there and certainly some of the stonework was incorporated into surrounding walls. One of the wayside cottages in the upper village took the columns of a doorway once built into the Priory entrance.
The priory was 12th century and the chapel was used as a church for both villages. There was a church built in the 19th century in one of the fields in Lower Catesby which took some of the Priory furniture including the Piscina and Sedilia. Presumably the priory was no longer usable but information on this has yet to be researched.

This fine building still stands on a hill between the two villages and was once home to the lexicographer John Parkhurst. An interesting man whom is reported to have been physically very weak and woke at 5am each morning to distinguish himself as Greek and Hebrew scholar.
He was born in this house and inherited a large fortune due to the death of his brother. He published a number of works including "A Hebrew and English Lexicon" to the New Testament (1792) and also "A Greek and English Lexicon" (1794).

The great central railway once ran through this quiet part of the countryside but sadly no longer entertains the great steam trains of it's day. A large tunnel and Viaduct were key structures in this small section of the track but both still remain and are imposing reminders of the years of hard service. They were built by T. Oliver & Son during 1896 and were opened in 1897. This part of the line ceased to operate on the 4th of September 1966.
The tunnel is just under 2 miles long which carried a twin track under the villages.

The viaduct was constructed in at the same time as the tunnel and has at twelve arches.
