This area is designed to evolve and grow to list the books and publications that might be of interest to county historians.
Looking Back, Volume 2 is the second book spawned from the popular Chronicle and Echo feature. The paper published old photos and asked for readers to comment on the events and people pictured. In 2007 the first Looking Back book was published and was a local hit and I can see this second edition will follow suit.
In all my research creating this site I found photos of places, people and occasionally events but there is very much a factual dialogue of what these things are. What I love about this book is the life that is oozing from each of the 200 images in this book. It really brings the town to life by filling the buildings and locations with the people of the time. Most of the descriptive captions come from the people in the picture or relatives of those featured. This always ensures a very interesting and intimate account by informing us who lived in a particular building, whether the lift worked most of the time, if it was tidy or scruffy inside and some of the antics that went on...
This approach serves to bring you closer to the people of Northampton and helps take you back in time to what it felt like to live in the town some 50 odd years ago.
If you knew the town during this era then this book will no doubt bring a smile to your face and surface a fond memory. If you don't know the Northampton of the 60's then this is by far the best way I have found to introduce yourself to it.
This book is certainly worth taking a look at next time you are in the bookshop. Younger Northamptonians should also keep this book in mind as a potential gift for older relatives who lived in the town. Another great local history book with a personal charm that others often fail to find.
