Harpole is a village 4 miles west of Northampton an easy 2 miles from Junction 16 of the M1.
There is a Norman church here with many alterations throughout the centuries. The Tower is around 14th Century but the real treasure of the church is the 12th Century font which represents the tree of life with a pair of dragons eating away at it.
Sir Richard Lane
The font was used to baptise Sir Richard Lane, a lawyer who defended the 1st Earl of Strafford, Thomas Wentworth (1593-1641) against the Commons but was impeached and ultimately executed for treason. Charles I was reported to have regretted the decision to execute Wentworth during his last few hours prior to his own execution.
Scarecrow Festival
Harpole hosts a scarecrow weekend whereby residents create many wonderful scarecrows from the traditional, to the not so traditional (including Spiderman!). This event attracts thousands of visitors who also have the opportunity to tour this historic village.
Car Boot
There is a regular Car Boot at Harpole where you can enjoy a fun Sunday morning before wandering around the rest of the village and perhaps visiting the church. This Car Boot is not every Sunday so check the press for details (we will try to update our Car Boot section regularly).
